중국 내 떠오르는 산업은 무엇일까. 업계의 주목을 받고 있는 분야는 바로 고성능 플라스틱과 의료용 플라스틱 산업이다.
중국이 고성능, 저비용 열가소성 천연수지 기반 합성물 등 소재시장 확대와 그에 대한 활용도가 높아지면서 전자정보, 에너지, 전력, 고효율건축 등 하이테크 산업으로 비약적 발전을 거듭하고 있다.
특히 천연수지 강화 기술이 진화하면서 탄소를 첨가하는 탄소강화 열가소성 천연수지 합성물을 개발하는 등 소재산업이 부상하면서 특수 플라스틱산업으로까지 그 영역이 확대되고 있다.
전례없는 빠른 속도를 내며 성장세를 견인하고 있는 장섬유 강화 열 가소성 플라스틱(LFT)이 많이 사용되면서 치수 안정성과 인장 강도, 내 충격성, 화학적 안정성 그리고 뛰어난 재생력까지 갖췄다는 점은 더할 나위 없다. 덕분에 자동차와 같은 전통산업에서 부터 우주, 항공, 방위산업에 이르기까지 플라스틱 합성물 소재 적용 범위가 넓어지자 경량성과 에너지 효율성을 높인 탄소 섬유 강화 열 가소성 플라스틱 분야가 중국의 새로운 성장동력으로 떠오르고 있다.
실제로 PEEK, PPS, flouropolymers, polysulfones, polyamides 등 고성능 소재는 다양한 민간 시장에서 어떻게 적용해야할 지 여부를 둘러싸고 논의가 활발하다. 새로운 고성능 소재의 개발과 연구는 단순히 효율성 향상, 전통 산업 기술의 발전 뿐 아니라 국가 경제 성장의 신 먹거리가 될 것이라는 기대감이 고조되고 있다.
고성능 플라스틱과 의료용 플라스틱은 중국의 또 다른 성장 포인트로 작용한 데는 치료결과에 대한 만족도와 환자의 생존율을 향상시킨데 있다. 생체 적합성 폴리머, 열가소성 엘라스토머, 액상 실리콘 고정밀 인젝션과 마이크로 인젝션 몰딩 그리고 3D 프린팅과 같은 성형 기술 등 플라스틱 소재 과학 발전이 한 몫 했다.
최근 초음파 인젝션 몰딩 기계의 발전은 미세 플라스틱 부품을 위한 고품질 생산과 비침투식 수술이 선호도가 높은 것도 이 같은 이유에서다. 최근 몇 년간 정부지출과 의료보험 개혁, 고령화와 중산층이 늘어나면서 중국 의료기술 시장은 바쁜 행보를 보이고 있다. 향후 십 수 년 간 중국내 블루칩 시장으로 떠오를 것이라는 전망도 나오고 있다.

Medical plastics industry makes rapid strides in China
Besides high-performance plastics, medical plastics will be another growth point in China. In recent years, China’s medical technology market has made rapid strides, which is driven by more government spending, ongoing healthcare reform, aging population and burgeoning middle class. This sector is expected to continue growing by 7-12% in the future. The most recent medical reform in China not onlyhas tightened up the safety and quality requirements, but is also in favor of domestic companies to self-invent and take off. In the next ten years, medical plastics will become one of the most promising markets in plastics industry in China.
The advances of plastic materials science such as bio-compatible polymer, thermoplastic elastomer, liquid silicone and processing technology including high precision injection technology, micro injection molding, 3D printing have helped realizing higher quality and precision medical devices and raising the bar of hygienic treatment conditions, hence to improve treatment results and survival rates.
